Launching out into the world
Well, I did it. I’ve been studying herbalism and natural medicine for a few years now and after many days of second guessing myself, I just went and did it. My friend who runs The Family Bees-ness farm here in Franklinton, NC encouraged me to join one of her farm market days. I set up my table and within a few minutes, was deep in discussion with a woman about our mutual sleep issues. I had no idea just how common it was for people to have a handful of hours that they called a “decent night’s sleep”. It felt like therapy for both of us when I handed her the magnesium balm that has given me so many nights of actual, deep sleep.
This is why I started Restorie Herbals. It’s for her and the many others like her that are struggling to sleep and have given in to the pharmaceuticals because that’s all their conventional allopathic doctors could recommend. I’ve always been a person who is interested in the cause, not the effect. Why are we having an issue with sleep? Is it stress? Is it hormonal changes? Is it a recent injury or change in our body that we aren’t yet used to? Is it the spouse who has the odd schedule and wakes you up when he or she climbs into bed? It can be so many things, but nature always has the answers, so I set out to find them.
In my journey, I found out about magnesium. It’s essential for over 300 functions in the body. According to this Weston A. Price article, “Every single cell in the human body demands adequate magnesium to function, or it will perish.” ( https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/abcs-of-nutrition/magnificent-magnesium/#gsc.tab=0)
That’ alarming, yes, but it’s also fixable. We can be eating all the right foods and still have issues because our bodies are not absorbing it. Also, the nutrients in our food have been depleated because our soil is sick. I’m a home gardener, so use all organic amendments and soil, which definitely helps, but I still wasn’t sleeping well. I tried a few oral magnesium supplements, but had the inevitable bowel issues which made me question if it was even staying in my system.
That’s when I discovered transdermal applications of magnesium. Our skin is our largest organ, so of course, this was the way, right? Wrong. Magnesium oil burns, ya’ll. I tried it and was disappointed to find that it wasn’t the relaxing experience I was hoping would lull me to sleep. Plus, it’s oily. Not great for keeping clean sheets.
From the same article linked above: “Next to intravenous magnesium administration, transdermal therapy provides a greater amount of magnesium to be absorbed than even the best tolerated oral supplements, and can restore intracellular concentrations in a matter of weeks rather than the months required for oral supplementation.” ( https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/abcs-of-nutrition/magnificent-magnesium/#gsc.tab=0)
But, I wanted something better than just the oil. That’s when I started experimenting with adding things like shea butter and beeswax along with a high quality grapeseed oil and essential oils.
Eureka! That was it. I knew that putting essential oils on my feet worked well because I’d been doing that with lavender and frankincense for years with good results and here’s why: (https://ca.home-essential-oils.com/blogs/discover/why-putting-essential-oils-on-the-bottom-of-your-feet-works) , so I decided to try the new magnesium balm I made on the bottom of my feet. I got 8 hours of sleep. I was stunned when I woke up and looked at my alarm clock. That had not happened in years.
It’s past 10:00pm, so I’m going to sign off for the night, but promise to continue this story soon. It’s so exciting to be on this journey and I’m honored to have you along for the right.
Sweet dreams, ya’ll.
